Imperial Rio and the legends of downtown
In 1808, the Portuguese Court moved to Rio de Janeiro, and that's how it became the capital of an empire. This historical tour begins in front of the Church Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga, one of the oldest churches in the city, where you will learn the story of the foundation of Rio de Janeiro. Pepe, your narrator, is very passionate to tell you the stories and legends down town Rio has to offer. You will admire the Palacio Imperial from the outside, as you learn the impact that Napoleon's endeavours in Europe had in the creation of Rio and its architectural heritage. During this tour, you can discover the legend of the Queen's mother, Mary the I, who was locked in a convent; the relogio carioca. Also, you'll pass by the building of the National Museum of Arts founded in 1937. The tour will take you to admire the building of the Municipal theatre, as you discover the history of the creation of the republic in 1889 and the story of Emperor Pedro the II. Your walk will finish while admiring the national library building where you can learn the background of plaza Floriano better known today as Cinelandia.
