Self-Guided Audio Tour - Imperial Rio

1 hour

Easy

In 1808, the Portuguese court moved to Rio de Janeiro, and so the city became the capital of an empire. This historical tour begins in front of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga, one of the oldest churches in the city, where you will learn about the early founding of Rio de Janeiro. Pepe, your narrator, is passionate about telling you the stories and legends that downtown Rio has to offer. You will be able to admire the Palacio Imperial from the outside and learn about the influence Napoleon's efforts in Europe had on Rio's founding and its architectural heritage. During this tour you will discover the legend of Mary I, who was imprisoned in a convent, the relogio carioca. You will also pass by the National Museum of the Arts, founded in 1937. On the tour you will see the Municipal Theatre and learn about the founding of the Republic in 1889 and the history of Emperor Pedro II. Your walk ends at the National Library building.
